A Harsh Truth
A few months ago, I read Savage Wisdom by Adam Cam, after following him for a while on Instagram. The man is brutal (and he loves his four-letter words), but I’ve long found myself attracted to people who tell the harsh truth without worrying about making anyone else unhappy. On the other hand, those are often the very folk I dislike more than others. A bit of a paradox, no?
So what is going on?
Well, it’s actually quite simple. Until recently, I didn’t respect myself enough to set boundaries with people, so watching someone who does it well is rather awe-inspiring. Adam does it very well, and today he shared something that I find especially meaningful at this point in my life: “Most family and friends don’t actually want the best version of you, they want the version of you that serves them best.”
I wonder if you’ve noticed such a dynamic in your own life.
