Little Wins

My thoughts are turning again to photography and art. I press buttons on my camera, push virtual sliders on my computer, then pick up my phone, and hit the + icon on Instagram. The wooden box holding 120 shades in pencil form has gotten dusted and it has been seen on the kitchen table fairly often in the past week or two. There’s even poetry in each day, and the kids—whether they care or not, get treated to a verses from Favorite Poems Old and New.

“What is the subject?” or better: “What should my subject be?” is a question I sometimes ask, whether I’m aware of the asking or aware of the answering. Flowers find their way into my viewfinder more than most other things, and the reasons for that are both straightforward and complex. Shooting flowers is often the easy way out, because they are readily available and generally quite lovely, but easy is not always bad, especially when little wins are what stand between “too overwhelmed to start” and eventual success.
